BRIEF HISTORY OF PARADISE
The Gold Rush brought the first white settlers to the Paradise area in about 1849. Before that the Ridge was home to the Maidu Indians. In 1859, on a hillside in Magalia, a 54-pound gold nugget was found. It is believed that the town was named after a saloon called 'The Pair-O-Dice.'
Gold mining and lumbering were the economic mainstays of the area. A variety of apples are harvested here and Noble Orchards, established in 1921, is the only such farm left on the ridge. In 1861 the first school opened, in 1879 the first church opened, and in 1904 the railroad depot was built at Black Olive and Pearson Road. The town was incorporated in 1979.
Wild flowers bloom abundantly and colorful trees, like dogwoods, put on a beautiful display. Located on the gentle slopes of the foothills in Butte County, Paradise is still one of the "best kept secrets" in California. An old saying about Paradise is, "above the fog and below the snow."
